If one thing’s for sure, EA loves to put out new peripherals for games or squeeze every last bit of juice out of existing add-ons. The company infamous for bringing us Rock Band instruments and skateboard add-ons is going to the well once more, planning to tap the Wii’s new MotionPlus peripheral for a brand new tennis franchise.
The as-yet-unnamed IP will see its first installment debut in 2009, and EA is promising to fully utilize the 1:1 motion sensing promised by the MotionPlus. The company has also confirmed that they have signed exclusive rights with the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which basically means they are now the only company allowed to use the Wimbledon Championships in their games. No word yet on if they’ve convinced the club to rename the tournament the "Wiimbledon Championships."
While the franchise is debuting on the Wii, EA has promised it will also makes its way over to the other consoles soon thereafter because, well, EA isn’t the sort of company to limit its income potential by releasing a game on only one console. That’s just silly. No no, there are gamers to exploit on all the consoles, so EA has to make sure they get their chance at the fun too.
As soon as MotionPlus was unveiled last month, we knew it would quickly find a home in sports games and it looks like EA is first up to bat. Now, all those folks who sunk hours and hours into Wii Tennis have an even more realistic way to flail around their living room like an idiot and break countless priceless Ming vases and other assorted antiquities.
