In the ever-changing landscape of corporate executives, it’s always fun to watch gaming big shots change companies and then trash the very products they defended only months before. Today’s candidate for "Why I secretly hated my old company" is Microsoft VP and former boss of Nintendo Europe David Goshen, who calls out his former employer for relying on razzle dazzle to wow the crowd, without ever offering real substance.
"What Nintendo have done with the Wii is truly fantastic - there is no question about it. But I think sometimes there is a thin line between gimmick and great gameplay."
Goshen went on to claim that 60 percent of people who bought Wii Fit never played it twice, and went on to say that if peripherals are just "okay" then they’ll end up "in the cupboard under the stairs," presumably living with Harry Potter just waiting to go to Hogwarts.
This is one area where I would tend to agree with Goshen, as it seems like Nintendo loves to parade out add-ons for the Wii that are only used once or twice and then forgotten. We’ve already had to suffer through the space-hogging of the Wii Wheel and Wii Zapper, and now the Balance Board sits gathering dust in the corner for all those who decided virtual exercise just wasn’t for them. Now we all sit and wonder if the MotionPlus will be the next thing we’re meant to attach to the Wiimote, simply to throw onto the pile of forgotten peripherals once we’ve finished Wii Sports Resort.
