Dan Sutton of Volition games has absolutely no interest in making a Wii version of Saints Row 2. His belief is that the weapons used in the game just make the whole experience a little too real when translated to motion controls, and the game would quickly stir up loads of controversy where none is intended. In a recent CVG interview with Sutton, the producer said:
"We have weapons like chainsaws, satchel charges, stuff like that. I can definitely see people having a problem and outcry towards that because it does actually feel like you’re using weapons that way...In Manhunt it feels like you’re hacking at somebody, though I suppose that was a bit more over the top than our game was. But yeah, I definitely think you’d get criticism for that in our game, GTA and Crackdown."
The thing is, it’s not just the motion controls that are the dealbreaker. Sutton also believes the Wii is simply too underpowered to run the game, and he would rather focus his team’s energies on the bigger, beefier platforms.
"I’d say that [the Nintendo E3 press conference] was definitely underwhelming," Sutton said.
"At Volition we’re really about pushing really good graphics and with the Wii you just fell like you’re playing on an older console. We’re definitely focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3."
So it looks like if you want to shoot someone in the face or carve them up with a chainsaw, you’re going to have to do it the old-fashioned way, with two control sticks and four face buttons, just like God intended. Not that controversy won’t find the game anyway; with the recent events in Thailand and society’s constant attempts to pin the world’s troubles at least partly on videogames, avoiding controversy on the Wii is a little like a morbidly obese person avoiding their fourth cheeseburger. Sure, you saved yourself a little trouble, but the damage is already done.
